masifunde's Changemaker Network Nelson Mandela Bay
masifunde's Changemaker Network currently capacitates learners from 47 high schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality with practical knowledge on relevant social topics. Through activation workshops for all grade 9 learners and intensive changemaker trainings for selected learners they spark positive change in their schools and communities.
The programmes can help guide learners that may be exposed to or experiencing violence to find coping skills, positive behavioural support, or peer-to-peer education. Such programmes can represent safe spaces for children to disclose experiences of violence, develop leadership skills, change at-risk behaviours and overall improve their resilience. Furthermore, this programme makes use of a peer-to-peer intervention strategy as it has been proven to work and encourage positive influence within schools and communities in general.
Focus
The Changemaker Network focuses on the following topics:
- Active Citizenship
- School Safety: Understanding Violence
- Bullying & Healthy Relationships
- Conflict & Conflict Resolutions
- Mental Health & Wellness
- Inclusion of persons with disabilities
- Prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV)
- Environment and climate change
- LGBT awareness
Spark magazines are a youth friendly, interactive magazine that changemakers use as a catalyst to bring change. Spark magazines contain more information on these focus topics, compiled by researchers and learners. Content allows readers to learn more about the topics as well as engage in practical tools and activities that one can put into practice and do with peers.
Activation Workshops
A 45-minute Activation Workshop is facilitated to Grade 9 learners in selected high schools in the across the country to encourage them to see themselves as potential changemakers who can promote equality and raise awareness about issues of public concern. In the workshop, the learners elect two of their peers to represent their school as changemaker and attend the one-week training.
Changemaker Training
Selected learners then attend a one-week training to become capacitated in the core topics and receive tools and methods necessary to act as changemakers in their schools. The objective is to create a common understanding of the importance of youth participation and resilience. Youthful methods are used and a safe environment is created which encourages dialogues, positive thinking and action.
Campaigning/Outreach
The changemakers then address their peers at the school’s assembly/ classrooms on the core topics they have been trained on. They share the knowledge they have learned through workshops, presentations, and art. They hand out the youth magazine SPARK to all learners in the school, as one of their primary acts as catalysts of positive change. The SPARK magazine is published for each of the topic, each with the content that the learners have been trained in and contributed towards.
